District 80 Service Positions

 

The District Committee Member (D.C.M.) is an essential link between the group G.S.R. and the area delegate to the General Service Conference. As leader of the district committee made up of all G.S.R’s in the district, the D.C.M. is exposed to the group conscience of the district. As a member of the area committee, he or she is able to pass on the district’s thinking to the delegate and the committee. Qualifications include having served as a G.S.R., within the past two years or a current district officer or committee chair, minimum of three years sobriety, have the time and energy to serve the district well and must be present to stand for office. Duty is primarily that of two-way communication. *for full duties see the A.A. Service Manual. Term & Election of the D.C.M. is for a period of two years with elections being held at the Fall (October) district business meeting and the assumption of duties on the 1st day of the new year.

 

 The Alternate District Committee Member (Alt D.C.M.) is the backup for the D.C.M. If the D.C.M. resigns or is unable to serve for any reason, the alternate steps in. Usually, the alternate is elected at the same time as the D.C.M., by the same procedure and same qualifications. The Alternate should be encouraged to assist, participate, and share  the D.C.M responsibilities at district and area meetings.  The Alternate is also the Web Site Committee Chair and oversees the committee meetings.

 

 The District Secretary

Duties: The secretary records and distributes minutes of district meetings; keeps mailing lists up to date and sends out district mailings; is responsible for preparing and distributing district flyers and notifies Central Office, Asheville of upcoming District 80 Events in a timely manner. This job is time consuming and needs to be carried out on schedule. The secretary needs to be sure that ample time is available to complete the many tasks. Qualifications include having had a reasonable period of sobriety, usually two or three years and some previous group experience.  Some background in general office work coupled with basic computer skills is helpful. Note: In order to fulfill these duties, it is essential that the secretary have a computer w/printer & Email access. Term & Election: In order to provide district committee continuity, the secretary position is normally filled on alternate years from D.C.M. elections and is for a two year period. 

The District Treasurer

Duties: The treasurer keeps financial records for the district and prepares quarterly financial reports; serves as budget chairperson and as such is responsible for convening an annual district budget committee meeting, preparing and submitting the annual budget proposal to the district committee for approval and payment / receipt of district funds. The treasurer is also responsible for encouraging groups within the district to support the District, Area and GSO. Qualifications include a strong sense of responsibility coupled with a solid period of sobriety (5 years or more). He or she should be organized and have some background in accounting or bookkeeping. Term & Election: This position is generally filled at the same time as D.C.M. elections, however, if the position becomes vacant and is filled out of normal sequence the newly elected treasurer shall be asked to serve a two year term from the date of assuming duties.

 

The District Registrar/ Web Site Administrator

Duties: This is a truly unique position. The registrar is responsible for maintaining records of all groups in the district including: group name, meeting location, time, type of meeting, G.S.R. or group contact. This information is forwarded to the Area Registrar, the District Secretary and Central Office, Asheville. The web site administrator is responsible for the upkeep of all group information and updates on the district web site.  He or she is directly responsible to the website committee.  Qualifications include a background in office management, strong  computer skills and a solid period of sobriety (5yrs or more). The person holding this position needs to be highly organized and detail oriented and willing to devote the time needed. Term & Election:  No term or election guidelines have been established for this position.

 

The District Grapevine (GV) Representative

Duties: The District Grapevine/ La Vina Representative is responsible for supplying group GV representatives with information forms, order forms and encourages group subscriptions to the Grapevine and /or La Vina. He or she will carry the message to the groups throughout the District. Qualifications include a reasonable period of sobriety and some service at the group level. Enthusiasm and a personal endorsement of the Grapevine’s value as a tool in sobriety is a must for this position. Term & Election:  This position is for a two year term concurrent with the D.C.M. term. 

 

The District Central Office Liaison officer

Duties: The district central office liaison officer is responsible for attending quarterly Central Office, Asheville meetings and reporting back to the district. Qualifications include a reasonable period of sobriety and some service at the group level. Good communication skills are essential in maintaining good relations between the central office and the district. Term & Election:  This position is for a two year term concurrent with the DCM term.

 

District Standing Committee Service Positions

 

The Cooperation with the Professional Community and Public Information (CPC/PI) Committee Chairperson: is responsible for encouraging groups and individual A.A. members to develop programs and activities that will help carry the A.A. message of recovery to professional groups and other individuals who have contact with alcoholics.  Also, they are responsible for creating a greater understanding of the A.A. program of recovery through the public media, electronic media, P.I. meetings and speaker panels. Qualifications:  A solid period of sobriety, usually three or four years and strong background in group service.  Term & Election: Generally this position is filled concurrent with DCM election and is for a two year term. However, if it is filled out of sequence the CPC/PI chairperson may be asked to serve two years from the date of assuming the position.

 

 

Correctional Facilities (CF) Committee Chairperson: Encourages A.A. members and groups within the district to assume responsibility for carrying A.A message of hope to alcoholics behind the walls. Acts as contact person for correctional facilities professionals.  Qualifications: Include a reasonable period of sobriety coupled with a heart-felt desire to carry the A.A. message of recovery inside the walls.  Term & Election: Generally this position is filled concurrent with DCM election and is for a two year term. However, if it is filled out of sequence, the CF chairperson may be asked to serve two years from the date of assuming the position.

 

 

Treatment Facilities (TF)Committee Chairperson: Coordinates the work of individual A.A. members and groups who carry the message of hope to alcoholics in treatment facilities. Acts as contact person for treatment facilities professionals. .   Qualifications: Include a reasonable period of sobriety coupled with a heart-felt desire to carry the A.A. message of recovery to treatment facilities.  Term & Election: Generally this position is filled concurrent with DCM election and is for a two year term. However, if it is filled out of sequence, the TF chairperson may be asked to serve two years from the date of assuming the position. 

 

 

Web Site Committee Chairperson: Is responsible for the administration and general oversight of the District Web Site in accordance with the web site mission statement and administration guidelines. Also, for coordinating web site committee business and direct liaison with the web site administrator. Qualifications:  The ADCM will take on the responsibilities of this position. Term and Election:  No term or election guidelines have been established for this position.
